In the digital age, where “I’m thinking of you” or “I’m grateful for you” is as easy as taking 10 seconds to compose a text, a handwritten letter can underscore the importance of the same sentiment tenfold. I’ve always been big on sending tangible letters to those I love because I want my people to know I care about them, sometimes when they least expect it. With the U.S. Postal service currently at risk, this small action feels all the more significant.

The USPS is an essential, vital service, and currently it’s facing potential disenfranchisement with cost-cutting moves set forth by the Trump administration. The implications of its importance are obvious ahead of the Presidential election in the wake of a pandemic, where the U.S. Postal Service anticipates an avalanche of absentee ballots this year and where Trump has said outright that he’s cutting costs because of ballots.

Election year or not, the United States Postal Service is a lifeline in our country in a multitude of ways, “providing a vital public service that is critical to this country’s infrastructure,” as stated on their site.  People rely on the USPS to stay connected to the rest of the country when privatized mail options like FedEx or UPS are not an option due to proximity or cost. And there are those who rely on the USPS for essentials like medication and PPE each day. The USPS is also one of the largest employers of veterans in the country. It’s in everybody’s best interest to help support the postal service, and one of the ways to do that as a citizen is to buy from them.

A few weeks ago, while browsing the USPS site for a new book of stamps, I discovered an unexpected selection of wonderful merch, from puzzles to rad T-shirts with “speedy delivery” emblazoned across the chest. If you do have the money to fiscally support the United States Postal Service, profits from buying stamps and gifts can immediately help the USPS stay afloat right now. If not, there are many ways to support the Postal Service without spending money from calling representatives, to texting “USPS” to 50409, to signing petitions, to familiarizing yourself with absentee ballot deadlines in your state, to working with organizations fighting against voter suppression.
